El Cajon Airplane Crash - EL CAJON (CNS) - A pilot was seriously injured but managed to walk away from the wreckage of a light plane that crashed into a city street in eastern San Diego County on Thursday.
The Cessna 195 engine collapsed shortly after 10:30 a.m. between two bridges that separate the eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 8 over Greenfield Drive in El Cajon, Heartland Fire & Rescue spokesman Andy McKellar said.

When the plane hit the street, it collided with an eastbound Hyundai Santa Fe, causing "moderate serious" damage to the small SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.

However, the plane "rolled pretty well" and the nose pitched to the point where the propeller was essentially facing backwards, McKellar said.
The 65-year-old pilot, a resident of San Diego and the sole occupant of the Cessna, was awake and conscious after the crash. Paramedics took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, CHP Public Affairs Director Travis Garrow said.
The cause of the crash that closed the 1700 block of Greenfield Drive is not yet known.
"We know (the pilot) was in contact with Gillespie Field (Airport) prior to the incident," McKellar said.

According to the FAA statement, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are working to determine the cause of the crash.
